In the days before 2008, Manchester Council had money for public art. I was asked to do something with a tree stump. The first question the locals asked was “Why are you cutting down our tree?” I had to explain that the council had cut it down for safety reasons and I was just sculpting it. If they had not decided to have it carved, it would look like the other trees in the park which had been cut down to ground level. The shape of the tree suggested two figures dancing as can be seen from the sketch I provided for the council’s concideration.
