Woodcarving is a one chance activity, as what has been cut off cannot be put back on. Lettering is even more of a one chance activity. With other carvings, I can usually change the design to cater for the erroneous cut. With lettering, the design is so formal that any error is immediately obvious and no design change is going to cover it up. With a letter carving, I average a cup of coffee every 5 letters to ensure that I am fresh enough to get it right.
